Essential Fatty Acids – Key Facts
What do you know about essential fatty acids? I’m sure you’ve heard of them before, probably in relation to products such as fish oil and omega 3 fortified foods. A quick definition: essential fatty acids are fats that the body needs for certain functions; however, the body is unable to create them on its own. So we must get them from our food, or supplements. These compounds comprise three primary groups: omega 3s, which are the most popular; omega 6, and omega 9. Omega 3′s come mostly from fish such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel. You can get Omega 6 from cooking oils. Omega 9 (which our body can manufacture so it’s not generally considered “essential”) can be found in olive oil, and nuts.Essential fatty acids have many health benefits of course. They help brain function and can reduce the risk of heart disease. They can also fight inflammation.
