The Story Behind the Laughing Cow
The Laughing Cow logo and story is an interesting one. The old girl didn’t start out red; in her first incarnation she was brown. The product itself was made by Léon Bel, who melted down a mishmash of different cheeses he had leftover at the end of the First World War. Seeing a meat truck with the name “Wachkyrie” – like Valkyries – emblazoned on its side, he decided to turn the name into a pun: “La Vache qui Rit”. His printer Vercasson altered the original Benjamin Rabier logo design (also trademarking it so Bel had to pay to use it), giving its Droste effect earrings as well as its iconic red colour.
